Natural Colourants and their Applications-An Overview

Until the 20th century, natural colourants were the only source of colour available for dyeing of textile materials and they were widely used and traded. With extensive testing of all synthetic products for carcinogenicity and mutagenicity, recently, a revival interest in the use of natural colourants in textile coloration has been growing. Natural colourants can exhibit better biodegradability and generally have a higher compatibility with the environment. This paper illustrates the history of natural colourants, their classification, and chemistry involved in natural colouranting with reference to textile materials.
