The monograph is a versatile scientific book devoted to the origin, history, and regularities in the development of sedimentary basins, the most important tectonic structures in the Earth's crust, which comprise the major deposits of many mineral resources, such as oil, gas, coal, salts, bauxite, phosphorite, iron ores, and others. Until recently, sedimentary basins were specific objects mainly studied by petroleum and coal geologists, because they possessed materials of geophysical studies, drilling data, and results of laboratory studies of cores and rock samples. It comes as no surprise that the most well-known classifications of sedimentary basins were compiled by geologists related in one way or another to petroleum prospecting and exploration (I.O. Brod, V.E. Khain, B.A. Sokolov, and others), resulting in a certain style of presentation of this problem. In the book reviewed, issues of the origin, structure, and development of sedimentary basins are considered by researchers who are not directly related to petroleum geology, but are capable of analyzing them from the more general geological (mainly, tectonic) standpoints owing to their scientific interests.
