The Chinese Railway Rolling Stock Corporation (CRRC) is entering the US railcar manufacturing sector in a big way, announcing its presence with the finesse of a 300kg gorilla entering a room. Such a decision was anticipated, but when and how it occurred surprised the industry - both in the US and elsewhere. While winning (in 2014) its first order for 284 metro cars for the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) for the Boston Subway rattled the established manufacturers' windows, the second order for 846 metro cars for Chicago shattered the glass. In both instances, new state-of-the-art manufacturing plants will be built to fulfil the orders. The next big question concerns the plants' future once these two major orders are fulfilled.
