Cleaner air saves lives

One of the benefits of the lockdown has been a noticeable absence of planes in the sky and fewer vehicles on the road. Not only has that meant a clearer night sky, but also less pollution in our urban centres. New research from the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA) has estimated that 11 000 deaths have been avoided across Europe - with 1752 of those being in the UK. After Germany, with an estimated 2083 avoided deaths, these are the highest reductions in Europe, illustrating just how bad air pollution is in the UK.
