Southern roots Religion and the South seem to go hand in hand, so it is no surprise that so much of Christian fiction take place in the southern United States. Many of the authors have Southern roots as well, but even for those from other areas, the South represents a setting where faith and society flow together naturally. The region's lay literature, as represented by William Faulkner, Flannery O'Connor, Ralph Ellison, W.E.B. Du Bois, and Alice Walker, also reflects this religious heritage.
