Libraries were among the first to provide relief efforts folio-wing, the ruinous spree of Hurricane Katrina, opening their doors to evacuees, offering temporary cards entitling them to books, computer access, and numerous other services. Vendors in the field, too, answered the SOS, donating money and materials. ProQuest mounted a powerful response, coming to the assistance of schoolchildren displaced by the storm. In addition to a $10,000 donation to the Red Cross, the publisher pledged $1 million in Voyager Learning reading and math instructional materials and complimentary four-month subscriptions to "Reading A-Z" and "Raz-Kids" books. ProQuest said that it would aim to provide Voyager materials to current Voyager customers working with displaced students, as those facilities already have staff trained in their use. The "Reading A-Z" and "Raz-Kids" offer is open "to any educator serving students" affected by the disaster. The offer runs until year's end. Additionally, "Reading A-Z" titles were distributed to families temporarily relocated to Houston's Astrodome and the city's other shelters.
