The Lewes Public Library has inhabited several structures throughout its long history, including a wing in city hall and an area within a museum dedicated to maritime history. In 1988, it moved into its current 13,000 square feet along the town's main drag, where it is flanked by railroad tracks. The community has become a haven for retirees, who've swelled its population from 12,000 to 20,000 in just a few years, and recently the library received state funding to grow to 24,000-26,000 square feet.
