"Forget it, Jake. It's Chinatown." Intended as comfort to private eye JJ. Gittes (Jack Nicholson), whose investigation of drought- ridden, 1930s-era Los Angeles water-use corruption ends tragically, the film's oft-quoted final line wearily acknowledges the futility of honorable motives. Nominated for 11 Oscars, Polanski's pessimistic 1974 film noir still remains the benchmark for the genre. In a much lighter vein, Hitchcock's Thief (1955) offers a mischievous mix of mystery, humor, and romance, starring Cary Grant as a former cat burglar suspected of returning to his old ways.
