Filmed in a beautiful setting in rural Ontario, director Walker's documentary is a gorgeously shot portrait of renowned master drummers giving master classes. Dennis Chambers, Kenwood Dennard, Horacio "El-Negro" Hernandez, Giovanni Hidalgo, Mike Mangini, Raul Rekow, and Nasyr Abdul Al-Khabyyr are the seven drummers teaching 40 eager and captivated students. Having played with artists such as Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, and Carlos Santana, these wonderful percussive experts are now front and center as the focus here is solely on drumming and these players rise to the challenge. Just as wonderful is how these musicians eloquently describe their craft, their motivations, their rewards, and the joy they take in listening to one another. Walker has done a superb job of placing viewers as close to the drum stool as possible. A Drummer's Dream will leave viewers listening for the beat everywhere, starting with their own heart.
