Wonder Woman is the iconic superhero of the feminist movement. This film documents her beginnings and how she changed through time, both reflecting and advancing women's place in American society. But instead of a static essay on a comic book character, director Guevara-Flanagan broadens the scope to include other female super-heroines, among them Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Lara Croft, Ellen Ripley from Aliens, and Sarah Conner from The Terminator. Interviews with Gloria Steinem and other feminist writers and artists are interspersed among clips and animations to give the superhero angle its proper historical and societal perspective. From the director's statement: "...we all need those iconic heroes that tell us we have the power to slay our dragons and don't have to wait around to be rescued." VERDICT This film focuses on one particular type of superheroine-the aggressive-fighter, weapon-carrying, physically powerful woman. Superheroines of the intellectual and peaceful type are not really addressed. Despite that omission, Wonder Women! fills a niche in feminist collections.
