On July 12, 2007, in Baghdad, Iraq, American Apache helicopters opened fire on a group of people, killing two Reuters journalists and some unarmed civilians among them. Though U.S. Army Specialist Ethan McCord was not involved in the attack, by rescuing two Iraqi children who survived the devastation, he later came to realize that he himself was part of a system that promoted and glorified such carnage. Haunted by this experience, he inquired about psychological counseling but was told that seeking help would be held against him and that he would be considered a malingerer.
