William Shatner returned to the small screen after Star Trek in the short-lived television series Barbary Coast (1975-76). He stars as Jeff Cable, an undercover agent with a penchant for elaborate disguises who patrols San Francisco's Barbary Coast in the 1880s. The town runs on casinos, saloons, and the numerous criminals who call it home. Cable uses his knowledge of prominent casino owner Cash Conover's (Doug McClure) shady past to enlist him as an ally in the constant pursuit of justice. VERDICT This Western's use of humor keeps one wanting to come back for more. However, the use of creative license is often stretched as far as possible, and Cable's Asian disguise is decidedly racist. Still, fans of Shatner or those who are nostalgic for 1970s television will be excited to see this on the shelves.
