Inspired by the off-key coloratura soprano Florence Foster Jenkins-subject of the eponymous Meryl Streep film now in theaters-writer-director Xavier Giannoli's version of a rich, self-deluded musical dilettante (Catherine Frot) serves as a soaring example of the French doing it better. Marguerite is no less funny for substituting tragicomedy for broad farce; it strikes a better balance between the ridiculous and the sympathetic, minus the undue emotional manipulation. Frot relies on solid acting chops-and a better script-to make her screechy singer more character than caricature. Bravo!
