Agatha Christie's Witness for the Prosecution has been filmed before, with the most notable version being the Academy Award-nominated 1957 movie directed by Billy Wilder and starring Marlene Dietrich. But now the same group responsible for last year's stunning remake of Christie's And Then There Were None is back with another stylishly dark update of her fiendishly clever mystery about a young man on trial for the murder of his older lover. This new film uses the author's short-rather than the play of the same name-as inspiration from which to craft a bleaker, occasionally racier, yet no less mesmerizing take that acutely plumbs the aftereffects of World War I for character motivation.
