For a long time the multiple and changing relationship between nature and society only played a minor role in sociological theory and research. Historically, this marginalization of natural facts in sociological analysis derives from the rejection of biologically deterministic models of social processes. The article discusses the shortcomings of these dualistic approaches and argues for a conceptual reconsideration of disciplinary boundaries. This proposal opens up a new research agenda challenging the established division of labour between the natural and the social sciences.
