Environmental assessment of enzyme application in the tanning industry

Enzymes are biological catalysts with an enormous capacity to increase the speed of biochemical reactions. They have evolved over millions of years and are found in any living organism. In our own bodies they play an essential role, for instance in degrading the food we eat. Enzymes are proteins not living organisms. They are everywhere in nature and can be easily degraded in natural environments as well as in wastewater treatment facilities. Enzymes are produced industrially today and are used in many industries to take advantage of nature's own workmanship.
