To thrive in today's environment of unprecedented volatility, leaders must be able to find order in chaos. They must maintain their clarity of thought and even think more clearly as the world becomes more confusing and threatening. This quality does not come naturally-but it can be learned. Clear thinking is not the same as intelligence. The reality is that any smart person can be rendered stupid under the right circumstances. Thinking about a problem under pressure is far more complex than tackling the same problem in a calmer light. When people are placed in a context for which they are entirely unprepared and enough pressure is applied to produce a state of severe agitation, the ability to think will simply shut down.
