The current open issue of Language and Intenultural Communication brings together a typically wide-ranging set of articles. Keith Ford explores the re-integration of 'returnees' into Japanese life through narrative reflections on crossing and re-crossing cultural boundaries. Ford's research raises several important issues, not least regarding the roles of educational institutions in the support of 'returnees' whose hybridity marks them as partially 'other' in the nominally 'home' culture. Ford also tantalisingly raises the issue of how praxis or research combined with reflection -can effectively intervene in providing emotional support for those who have negative experiences of boundary re-crossing.
