'George Eliot's French': transcending the monocultural self in Daniel Deronda

摘要

Focusing on an analysis of French lexical items in George Eliot's Daniel Deronda, this article examines the nature of composite textuality. More precisely, it proposes a way of describing the use of an intercultural idiom in Daniel Deronda as a way of shedding light on the nature of linguistic borrowing in the context of dialogical identity. This will provide the basis for the claim that the characters' use of mixed utterances generates inferences, which make the transcending of the monocultural self possible and create alternatives of being. Le present article a pour but d'examiner l'alternance codique dans le roman de George Eliot, Daniel Deronda. Nous appuyant sur une analyse dialogique de l'OEuvre, nous nous proposons de decrire cet idiome interculturel dans le contexte des emprunts linguistiques et de l'identite polyphonique. Ceci nous amenera a demontrer que l'utilisation de l'alternance codique chez certains personnages du roman cree des inferences qui leur permettent de transcender leur identite mono-culturelle et d'aller au-dela d'une certaine maniere d'etre.
