Jeffrey Hou, Julie Johnson, and Laura Lawson's new book Greening Cities, Growing Communities explores the premisernthat community gardens address urban issues such as social equity and personal health. They claim that these gardens have implications for social, economic, and environmental urban sustainability, and use detailed case studies to explore and argue the relevance of community gardens for substantive change. These goals may be lofty and challenging, but for the most part, the case study structure of the book provides support for the authors' claims. More importantly, the book is an accessible tool for students, educators, professionals, and community members that provides support for decision-making regarding community garden structure, design, organization, and programs.
