From past to future: The Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition's legacy is evident on the University of Washington campus

By masterfully grading the earth to frame views and establish circulation routes, while also providing both a native and a formal landscape setting for the architecture of the 1909 Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition (AYP) in Seattle, John Charles Olmsted created a framework of urban and landscape design so powerful that it still defines the University of Washington campus today. In the first issue of Landscape Architecture a century ago, James Frederick Dawson summarized John Charles Olm-sted's ambitious vision for the AYP, making reference to the plan's three vistas.
