DRONES ON THE RANGE

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Research Service (ARS), already engaged in manned aircraft monitoring research, has expanded into the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) to track changing landscapes over acres of rangeland from New Mexico to Idaho. Partially funded by the Bureau of Land Management, an ARS team at the Jornada Experimental Range in Las Cruces, New Mexico, joined with New Mexico State University researcher Andrea Lali-berte to assess the effectiveness of digital images of land, shot from UAVs, to determine landscape changes, plant types, and erosion control needs.
