Twenty-five years hence, we've both struggled to allow the rigors and rewards of teaching to influence our practices-though our practices are notably different After many years of teaching at Rhode Island School of Design, she left the school recently to concentrate more fully on her expanding professional office. For a long while, I've wanted to talk with her about the unique identity she has created through her work, about her sources and working process, and about her relationship to orthodox practice. We met on a spring afternoon in her studio, one day after horrific events at the finish line of the Boston Marathon put the city on high alert and produced an intense collective fear that telegraphed well beyond our neighborhood. We were traumatized. Talking about design proved to be a helpful distraction.
