In late february at the brooklyn botanic garden, LAM convened a group of people immersed in the world of public gardens to talk about the nature of these institutions as clients-what they do and what they need from designers. The talk ranged broadly. It encompassed the changing purpose of public gardens and the imperatives of public outreach, research, education, funding, and the design and construction process for new projects. This record of the conversation has been edited and condensed.
