When Mario Bolivar was looking for new ideas for a house he was designing in Cancun, he went to New York City. Bolivar has his own architecture and landscape design practice in Mexico's Tabasco State. In New York, he visited the Material Connexion library. "I was looking for materials that would inspire me. I was looking for wood, veneers, tiles, marble," he says. And he found something: Q-stone, a type of porcelain tile that includes at least 40 percent recycled content. Bolivar used it on the house's exteriors, around the new pool, and on all the landscape pathways. The material opened up Bolivar's thinking about the design itself and allowed him to give his client a product never before seen in Mexico. Material Connexion was founded in 1997 to bring materials-science knowledge to the design and engineering professions. Materials science develops and tests innovative polymers, metals, and other stuff mainly for the aerospace, industrial, and technology sectors. Andrew Dent is a materials scientist who has been with Material Connexion for 13 years. He says his main goal is to "help people understand the potential of materials, so designers can use them more creatively."
