THE ROAD FROM INHOTIM

JUST PRIOR TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC, I traveled to Brazil to carry out research supported by the Deborah J. Norden Fund from the Architectural League of New York. I was interested in understanding how Inhotim, an ambitious contemporary outdoor art center, had affected the local population and offered an alternative model for rural development Having grown up in a small town in central New York, I was particularly interested in the tension between a living arts center and the stark realities that often define opportunities and priorities in rural economies. I did not know how much the world would change in the subsequent months or how the importance of cultural resources and outdoor spaces would become increasingly relevant.
