ECO-AGRO-URBANISM: ENVISIONING A PRODUCTIVE URBAN FUTURE FOR VILLA NUEVA, GUATEMALA

The collision between traditional agriculture and rapid urbanization is acutely evident in places like Guatemala City, the capital of Guatemala. This master plan posits a model for sustainable development, bringing together varied land uses, stitching together socially segregated neighborhoods, and promoting economic growth. Focused on an area in the adjoining city of Villa Nueva with a large tract of public land, the plan turns the underused, closed-off fields into a park that combines agriculture with forest reserve. New paths through the park would connect the low-income informal neighborhood on one side with a gated community on the other. In this comprehensive vision, a new mixed-use district, affordable housing options, and local agriculture-related businesses are centered on a new public transportation route that runs alongside the park.
