In 20 years of professional practice using native plants, ecological designer W. Gary Smith has found that every project begins by redefining the defini-tion of "native." His design for Peirce's Woods, a seven-acre woodland arboretum that is part of Longwood Gardens in Ken-nett Square, Pennsylvania, was no exception. According to Smith, a landscape architect, artist, and former professor of garden design at the University of Delaware, the general definition of a native plant is something that would tend to occur naturally in a particular region. To maximize the possibilities for using plants with physical impact, Longwood chose a broader definition.
