One might be forgiven, at first glance, for concluding that the exhibition Kiku: The Art of Japanese Chrysanthemum was invaded by some alien spore that took root in the plaza joining two courtyards on the grounds of the New York Botanical Garden and grew overnight into some monstrous strain of galactic flora. The actuality is some- what more down to earth, though still intriguing. To complement its autumnal celebration of exquisitely cultivated floriculture, the garden invited Tetsunori Kawana to construct a seemingly incongruous installation, an ugly duckling among the swans.
