An Experimental Study on Mechanical Behavior of Concrete Pier Subjected to Cyclic Load

In this paper, we tried to explain the effects of axial pre-compressive stress to the concrete pier from the point of view of seismic design. The cyclic horizontal loading test was carried out with model concrete specimens, whose size was about 1/10 of actual high piers. In this test, the following two factors were considered: one was wheter axial compressive stress was applied or not, the other was whether axial compressive stress was applied by external force or internal force. The failure mode, deformation of pier specimen and the strain of reinforced bar were examined. As a results, axial compressive stress was necessary for the stable destruction by bending moment, axial compressive stress applied by PC bars was effective to improve the capacity of members, residual displacement was decreased and specimen behaved like elastic members. However, axial compressive stress by PC bars reduced the absorption performance of energy in PC specimen.
