Sustainability focus boosts demand for linen

Over the last 10 years, the production of flax - the crop used for the manufacturing of linen - has expanded significantly in Europe, rising by 43% from 98,987 tonnes in 2007/08 to 141,148 tonnes in 2016/17, according to figures from the European Confederation of Linen and Hemp (CELC). Europe's leading flax producing countries are France, Belgium and the Netherlands, which together account for 80% of the world's production. The expansion in flax production over the past decade has been driven by growing demand for the fibre -generated by a range of factors including new product innovations, industry promotion, and greater concerns around sustainability among today's consumer.
