In the late 1800s, Kentucky was producing more than half of the grape and wine output in the United States - and we were good at it, too. But prohibition in the 1920s killed off mass quantity and quality, as vines were zealously ripped from the ground and destined not to take root again for decades. Kentucky never recovered its grapevine crown, and the big three of tobacco, bourbon and horses continued to define and dominate the commonwealth in the national consciousness for the next 70 years. As a result, our once continental reputation as fine winemakers became lost to antiquity. Indeed, up until very recent history, if you asked an out-of-state visitor (or even your neighbor) to sample a Kentucky wine, you were usually met with skepticism and a polite smirk before lips ever touched glass.
