We present a simulation which can depict the rotational vibration of a helical gear pair with various types of tooth surface deviation during transmission of a light load, i.e., the contact pattern does not extend full surface due to the tooth flank deviation. First, to analyze the effect of any type of tooth surface deviation, compressive deformation by tooth-to-tooth contact was modeled as the contact between a finite width plane and a roller the diameter of which changes arbitrarily by a small amount along the axis. Secondly, to analyze the compressive deformation of a gear pair with relatively narrow tooth width, the effect of free edges has been clarified and introduced. The reaction force between the driving and the driven gears is introduced into the dynamic equation of motion instead of the elastic term composed of stiffness and relative displacement of a gear pair for the estimation of nonlinear elastic behavior under a light load condition. The simulation code is developed based on the above ideas, and it is experimentally verified for various types of tooth surface deviation.
