Punched-Card Systems and the Early Information Explosion, 1880- 1945

Lars Heide, Associate Professor at the Centre for Business History at the Copenhagen Business School, has written a thorough and comprehensive history of the storage and processing medium that thoroughly dominated computing and data processing for a century, namely, the punched card. Punched cards briefly regained the spotlight for their role in the contested 2000 U.S. Presidential election, but by that time it had been two decades since puncned cards had any significant use in computing. Today few Information and Computer Technologies workers remember when punched cards were the preferred way to input data and develop software for large computer installations.
