An analytic theory of a continuous peptide chain is based on a set of partial differential equation derived from a variational principle and appropriate kinematic constraints. Particular solutions are examined, e.g. the helix and its stability. Equations are derived for the chain in a simple shear flow. The multi-scale method is applied to derive approximate (asymptotic) solutions.
