A method is presented to calculate the elastic flexural and warping normal stresses in simple span cold-formed C-and Z-sections, with end torsional restraints and one flange attached to the sheathing. The method utilizes a displacement compatibility approach to calculate the normal stresses at transition points in the cross section, i.e., web-flange intersection, flange-stiffener intersection, and the end of the flange stiffener. The method incorporates the stiffness of the diaphragm and the torsion-restraining effects of the sheathing. The example provided shows that the distribution of stresses across the cross section is sensitive to the restraining effects of the sheathing and can deviate significantly from the typically assumed stress distribution of constrained bending. The procedure for calculating the stresses and deformations and system forces is outlined, and trends observed by the authors are discussed. (C) 2015 American Society of Civil Engineers.
