With Nexus, Jonathan Winkler has given students of American foreign policy and the history of technology a compelling introduction to the emergence of the United States as a world power and the construction,rnand growing strategic importance of, a global communications infrastructure. Winkler covers a relatively short slice of the twentieth century, from 4 August 1914, when the British cable ship the Alert sailed off the English coast and severed all five of Germany's submarine telegraph cables, to the early 1920s, by which point the US Navy had sponsored the creation of the Radio Corporation of America (RCA) and American telegraph companies had established a competitive market position in Latin America.
