Alan was a well-known figure in the University Archive Sector where he spent most of his working life. He will be best known for his time at Churchill College Cambridge, where he was employed from 1981 to 1983 and again from 1991 to 2000. In the intervening period he studied for his Masters in Archives Administration at Liverpool University then worked as archivist in Trinity College Cambridge. In 2000 he moved to King's College London then worked at Duxford RAF Museum, The Tower Project Cambridge University and finally the British Antarctic Survey. He turned 60 last June and was very much looking forward to retirement. Sadly, he died in his sleep in November having had a heart attack.1 Alan was born, in Cambridge on 14 June 1958, the eldest son of a teacher and a Polish refugee (his father had served in the Polish contingent of the British Army during World War 2). Alan was educated locally and was noted for having a good grasp of languages, especially Latin, and a great love of history. He showed an early interest in record-keeping when he developed his lifelong passion for cricket. His brother remembers him, not content to just sit and watch the match but surrounding himself with Wisdens and other cricketing books checking statistics and form and creating his own records of play and performance.
