Century Pulp and Paper Mill effluent while flowing, percolates through soil and slowly mixes with ground water. This results into ground water pollution by increase in various physico-chemical characteristics viz., pH, EC, BOD, COD, TS, TDS, Na, K, Ca, Mg, lignin, and SAR of ground water. Chemical precipitation, lagooning, activated sludge, and anaerobic treatments are the common treatment processes for pulp and paper mill effluent. These all are costly processes for an industry to adopt and run. An economically feasible and environment-friendly natural method of effluent treatment, i.e. ly-simetric/land treatment is suggested. The four types of soil textures viz., pure soil (STJ, soil mixed with sand in ratio of 50: 50 (ST_2), 75: 25 (ST_3), and 25: 75 (ST_4) are taken for lysimetric treatment of this effluent. The experiment shows that the normal soil (ST_1) reduces most of the selected parameters of effluent more efficiently than ST4, however the pH of the effluent is not changed significantly. EC, colour, BOD, COD, TS, TDS, P, K, Na, Ca, Mg, and lignin are found to be minimum in leachate, collected from ST_1 on 75th d of irrigation with 25 per cent effluent.
