摘要

This monograph will be of interest to specialists engaged in research on the one hand into Hindu deities, their origins and metamorphoses, and on the other into their appropriation by the Buddhist tradition in which their character changes by conversion to the Dharma whereupon they serve in a subordinate position as its guardians or defenders. It thus concerns indologists and buddhologists. With the spread of Buddhism to countries in the Far East, these Hindu deities became widely known in all of them and sometimes assumed independent or semi-independent roles in their iconography and popular worship. So the monograph addresses also sinologists and japanologists, and possibly also koreanists since Korea acquired the complete body of Buddhist scriptures from China and produced a wealth of commentaries on them.
