摘要

This collection of essays is one of the growing number of books published on madrasas in general, and madrasas in South Asia in particular, after the western policy community in the wake of 9/11 came to link them to international terrorism. It is the outcome of a workshop on the subject at Erfurt in May 2005. The aim is to produce understandings of madrasas, which acknowledge both their substantial contribution to mass Muslim education and their shortcomings, and thus to enable a better-informed debate on their current role and future development. "It is to be hoped", Jamal Malik declares in his wide-ranging and thoughtful introduction, "that the reader will emerge with a sense that Islamic education is an integral - some might say indispensable - feature of modern Muslim life in South Asia, one that has been (or could become) associated with violence under very specific conditions".
