Archibald Wavell was an extremely able soldier and administrator (as well as an intellectual, a lover of poetry and speaker of Russian) who, from just before the outbreak of World War II until the two years immediately following it, occupied positions of the highest military and political importance (General Officer Commanding Palestine and Transjordan, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Middle East, Command-in Chief, India, Viceroy of India).
