Roselyne Hurel's work, of which the first two volumes have now appeared, is the first to systematically evaluate the 2,500 and more paintings that the National Library of France has accumulated since the eighteenth century. It will stand with similar works such as Linda Leach's catalogue of the Chester Beatty collection as an indispensable book for the students, collectors and others interested in the field of Indian painting for at least a generation and probably longer. We are fortunate that this little studied collection came to be catalogued by a meticulous scholar and at a time when it has become economic for high quality colour printing to be used for every illustration. The work is further remarkable for having been produced by someone who spent her professional life dedicated to European Art as a curator at the Carnavalet Museum in Paris.
