George Giles, MICE, 1810-1877 : the biography of a civil engineer

George Giles was not of the front rank of engineers along with names such as Bazalgette, Brunei, Peto, Rennie and Stephenson, but the evidence suggests that he was nevertheless a very competent and successful engineer. His career exemplifies four general points, the first being the early nineteenth-century overlap between the surveying and engineering professions; the second the considerable importance of family connections; the third Giles' fulfilment of different roles; and fourthly the fact that many British engineers worked abroad for long periods, this being the age when Britain led the world in such matters.
