An error detection of inlet start/unstart has been reported as a significant flight accident in the Central Institute of Aviation Motors/NASA Mach 6.5 scramjet flight test It is believed that nonlinear effects that give rise to the catastrophe and hysteresis behaviors in the transitions of inlet start/unstart may be the essential factors that result in the flight accident Starting from nonlinear interaction effects and dynamical system theories, evidence of multistability and loops-coupled hysteresis phenomenon exhibited in the hypersonic inlet is reported. Multistability of a dynamic system consists of the ability to express multiple-stable states and to switch between these states in response to some external input The loops-coupled hysteresis phenomenon, which appears as a generic feature of multistability systems, is characterized by the existence of at least one hysteresis loop that involves more than two stable states. The present study shows the loops-coupled hysteresis phenomenon has occurred in the flight test, and a neglect of the multistability and loops-coupled hysteresis phenomenon has given rise to the error detection of inlet start/unstart in the Central Institute of Aviation Motors/NASA Mach 6.5 scramjet flight test.
