The particle-size dependence of the catalytic activity of Fe_2O_3 on the burning of an AN/HTPB propellant was investigated in this study. For the propellant supplemented with Fe_2O_3 alone, the burning rate increased with decreasing size of Fe_2O_3 particles. Specifically, when 151 nm Fe_2O_3 particles were used, the burning rate of the propellant supplemented with both catalysts was higher than that of the propellant with Fe_2O_3 alone at pressures above 2 MPa. However, below this pressure, the burning rates were not significantly different. In contrast, when 49 nm Fe_2O_3 particles were used, the burning rate of the propellant supplemented with both catalysts was almost the same as that of the propellant used with Fe_2O_3 alone, at all pressures, except that of 0.5 MPa. Where the propellant was supplemented with both Fe_2O_3 and MnO_2, the catalytic effect of the 151 nm Fe_2O_3 particles was greater than that of the 49 nm Fe_2O_3 particles at pressures above 2 Mpa.
