Among the fields of economics, finance stands alone as the most successful in integrating first-rate science and first-rate practice, with progress in each enhancing progress in the other. Through his founding of The Journal of Portfolio Management, his books Capital Ideas I and II, and the ubiquitous "risk" books, Peter Bernstein was the most successful in documenting and communicating that remarkable process to broad audiences, ranging from the novice student to the seasoned professional. In so doing, he contributed significantly to the very integrating process he described.
