Peter was my mentor when I needed mentoring most. I can still see myself in 1980, standing at the doorway of the mailroom of Santa Clara University, opening a letter from Peter. It was one of his small-size letters, surely familiar to all who have corresponded with him. Peter had written that he liked the paper I'd submitted to The Journal of Portfolio Management and would publish it there. This is my first memory of Peter, and this was the very first of my papers to be accepted by a journal.
