How Technology Will Change the Business of Investing

New information technologies are emerging, among them machine learning platforms, database architectures and predictive intelligence engines. Although such info-tech advances may not be intended for use in the financial services industry, they are empowering investors and their asset managers to gain an edge-and they offer investors unique ways to leverage that competitive advantage.For example, one company has developed an artificial intelligence tool that analyzes satellite imagery to track changes in the surface of the earth. "Investors are using it to help forecast forward-looking indicators, like economic development and retail sales," says Ashby Monk, Executive Director of the Global Projects Center at Stanford University and a Senior Research Associate at the University of Oxford. Monk is leading a research effort to determine how next-generation technology fits into the broader sphere of institutional investment. How do large institutions adopt new technologies, and what are some of the lessons they are learning from doing so? In an interview with Institutional Investor Journals, Monk discussed his presentation at the 69th CFA Institute Annual Conference in Montreal.
