Using Mbone technology to support a framework for a remote advisory service

This paper presents the NEAT(Networked Expertise, Advice and Tuition)project and describes the development of a remote advisory system that has been designed to provide students with a remote access advisory service using IP(Internet Protocol) multicast over the Mbone(Multicast Backbone). It discusses the requirements of such a system; the functionally of IP multicast; its advantages and disadvantages; multicast applications that can be used to support a remote advisory service; how NEAT is using multicast to provide such a service; and how NEAT has been able to overcome some of its limitations. In addition to describing the approach used to implement this system, the paper goes on to discuss how such a framework might support group working and remote lecturing.
